How To Measure Your Spinal Hyperkyphosis

CHECK YOUR SPINAL MOBILITY Have you ever heard the term ‘hyperkyphosis’? It means that the upper back curves too much forward - kyphosis is the name of our natural upper back curves, and hyper means there’s too much of it. It’s very common for modern humans to have really sticky, immobile upper backs, which has a huge impact on our breathing, core function, and pelvic floors. You won’t be surprised that being on keyboards and not moving our arms a lot can impact our upper backs, but did you know the way we walk has a lot to do with it as well? If we don’t use our legs to push us forward, then we use gravity to pull us forward, which means a mini-fall with every step. All those mini-falls add up to a lot of whiplash-like loads for our upper backs and necks, which contributes to this non-awesome curvature and sticky-ness. And here’s the worst part - it’s easy to hide, so most people have no idea it’s a thing for them. Here’s how to find out what your curves are like. Stand with your feet about 1-3 inches from a wall so you can gently place your shoulder blades and your butt on the wall. Make sure your hips are vertically over your heels from the side. Lift and lower your rib cage a few times to get comfortable with this movement - feel the wall slide up and down your back. Now curl forward so your low ribs are on the wall - basically the bra strap area. GLUE your ribs to the wall and don’t move your lower body. Then slide your head, neck & shoulders back to the wall - as much as possible without forcing it. Make sure not to move your ribs - its really easy and it messes up the measurement. How big is the gap behind your head? Ideally, your head would rest lightly on the wall. I still have some work to do, but my gap has changed from about 7-8 fingers to about 2-3 since I started doing movement and mobility work. I’ll get there someday!
