His raw, aggressive guitar style and horror-themed songwriting helped define the early horror punk movement. One of his most iconic contributions to The Misfits was "Halloween," a fan-favorite track that remains a staple of the band’s legacy. Originally recorded during the infamous 12 Hits from Hell sessions, Halloween was meant to showcase The Misfits' evolution, but due to internal conflicts, Steele was fired, and the album was shelved for decades. 🎸 Bobby Steele and The Misfits (1978-1980) – The 12 Hits from Hell Sessions Bobby Steele joined The Misfits in 1978, helping shape their sound on legendary recordings like "Horror Business," "Night of the Living Dead," and "London Dungeon." In August 1980, The Misfits entered C.I. Studios in New York to record what would later be known as 12 Hits from Hell, an album meant to feature definitive versions of their strongest material. This session included now-iconic tracks such as: "Halloween" "Skulls" "Where Eagles Dare" "I Turned into a Martian" "London Dungeon" Steele’s sharp, haunting guitar work gave these recordings a more aggressive, sinister feel, enhancing the band's horror aesthetic. However, before 12 Hits from Hell could be released, Steele was fired from The Misfits, reportedly due to growing tensions with Glenn Danzig and Jerry Only. His replacement, Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, re-recorded most of the guitar parts, effectively erasing Steele’s contributions. The album remained unreleased for over 20 years, finally resurfacing as a rare, withdrawn release in 2001, making it one of the most mysterious and sought-after Misfits recordings. 🔥 The Story of Halloween – A Horror Punk Anthem One of the standout tracks from 12 Hits from Hell was "Halloween," a song that perfectly captured The Misfits’ horror aesthetic. First released as a 7-inch single in 1981, Halloween quickly became a seasonal punk anthem, celebrating the spirit of the holiday with eerie, violent, and surreal imagery. Musically, Halloween features: Fast, aggressive power chords that create an urgent, almost hypnotic energy. Glenn Danzig’s haunting vocals, delivering lyrics about trick-or-treating, razor blades, and ghostly visions. Dark, horror-themed imagery that would become a blueprint for horror punk. Lyrically, Halloween paints a gruesome picture of the holiday’s sinister side, filled with twisted, unsettling visuals that blur the line between childhood fun and terrifying horror. 🔥 The Birth of The Undead (1980-Present) – Bobby Steele’s Horror Punk Legacy After being fired from The Misfits, Steele refused to fade away and instead formed his own band, The Undead, in 1980. Unlike The Misfits, The Undead mixed horror themes with a more melodic, straight-ahead punk sound, influenced by garage rock and classic rock ‘n’ roll. Their debut EP, 9 Toes Later (1982), featured fan favorites like "When the Evening Comes" and "A Life of Our Own," solidifying The Undead as a force in the NYC underground punk scene. Over the years, Steele and The Undead released multiple albums, including: Act Your Rage (1989) Dawn of the Undead (1991) Still Undead After All These Years (2007) Despite lineup changes and industry challenges, The Undead continues to tour and release music, proving that Bobby Steele’s DIY punk spirit and horror-fueled vision remain as strong as ever. 🔥 The Lasting Impact of Halloween and 12 Hits from Hell Though Bobby Steele’s guitar work on Halloween was erased from the final Misfits releases, his influence shaped the horror punk genre, inspiring bands like Blitzkid, Calabrese, and The Other. Halloween has since become one of The Misfits’ most enduring songs, played annually at punk shows, horror conventions, and Halloween parties worldwide.
