The Polar Bear is an extremely carnivorous bear whose natural habitat is found primarily in the Arctic Circle, including the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding waters, and nearby landmasses. It is both the largest extant terrestrial carnivore and the largest extant bear species. An adult female (sow) is around half the size of an adult male (boar) and weighs roughly 350-700 kg (770-1,540 lb). The Polar Bear spends a large portion of the year at sea and is thus a marine mammal. It is the only extant marine animal with strong, broad limbs and feet, which enable it to run and walk for long distances on land. The annual sea ice that covers the waters above the continental shelf and the Arctic inter-island archipelagos is its favored habitat. When compared to the deep waters of the high Arctic, these regions, also referred to as the "Arctic ring of life," have high biological productivity. The polar bear is a member of the bear family, and it feeds primarily on ringed and bearded seals throughout most of its range. Millions of seals live in the Arctic, where they surface in holes in the ice to breathe or haul out on the ice to rest. Polar bears hunt primarily at the interface of ice, water, and air; they only catch seals on land or in open water on rare occasions. The bear uses its keen sense of smell to find a seal breathing hole and crouches nearby in silence, waiting for a seal to appear. The bear could wait for several hours. When the seal exhales, the bear smells its breath and reaches into the hole with its forepaw, dragging the seal out onto the ice. Females begin breeding at the age of four in most areas, and five in the Beaufort Sea region. Males typically reach sexual maturity at the age of six years; however, due to fierce competition for females, many do not breed until the age of eight or ten. It is not uncommon for polar bears to have a lifespan of up to 25 years. The longest-lived wild bear recorded reached the age of 32, while the oldest captive polar bear died in 1991 at the age of 43.
