(28 Feb 1999) English/Nat The man who led American troops to battle in the Persian Gulf War says he's sorry he couldn't bring them all home. Retired General Norman Schwarzkopf is joining families, friends and veterans of the Gulf War this weekend in Washington to honour those who died in the conflict some eight years ago. And Sunday they're remembering the sacrifice of those from the U-S and other nations in the war against Iraq. Eight years ago he was the Commander-in-Chief of U-S forces in the Persian Gulf. Today Norman Schwarzkopf is an old soldier who joins fellow veterans of the Persian Gulf War at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington D-C. They were here on a gray winter Sunday with family and friends of U-S men and women who died in the Persian Gulf War. The U-S sent some 300-thousand troops into the Gulf in 1990 and 1991, sent to counter Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait. More than 400 were killed during that time. Other nations lost citizens as well, including America's Gulf coaliton partners -- Britain, France, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Egypt. Their fallen also were honored here Sunday by General Swarzkopf and others. It was the old soldier who remembered those who didn't return as reluctant but brave soldiers sent to do a difficult job. SOUNDBITE: (English) "They were my troops. They were all volunteers. They didn't want to go to war. They didn't want to leave their families. But when their country asked them to they did.....because they thought it was the right thing to do." SUPER CAPTION: Norman Schwarzkopf, retired U.S. general. Eight years later, a general who has tasted victory in battle in the Persian Gulf also feels the pain of having lost soldiers under his command. SOUNDBITE: (English) "They were truely, truely the best thing that America has to offer the world. I'm sorry I couldn't bring them all back... to you." SUPER CAPTION: Norman Schwarzkopf, retired U.S. General Kuwait's ambassader to Washington reminded those gathered that Saddam Hussein is still a threat in the region. But he too shares the view of those here that those who made gave their lives eight years ago did not do so in vain. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Only America possess the military capabilities and moral fortitude to preserve peace and contain evil. Indeed, without the moral leadership of the United States, and the bravery of her armed forces and that of the Gulf coalition partners, Kuwait would not today enjoy its freedom." SUPER CAPTION: Dr. Mohammed Sabah Al-Salim Al-Sabah, Kuwaiti Ambassador. They've been honouring the Persian Gulf fallen here since 1992. And the non-profit human rights group No Greater Love, which sponsors the event, says they'll continue to gather here every year in memory of those who didn't come home.
