This is a home made Compact Linear Fresnel Reflector solar concentrator made with 40x 40mm by 600mm mirrors. The idea is that concentrated energy (approx 35 suns depending on reflectivity of mirrors) is focused on a water heating tube located at the focus about 1M above the mirrors. This design is good for a flat roof or backyard. One problem is the intense light so your collector should be shielded from direct view. I'd like to make a 3m x 3m version. I have seen a DIY guy make one of these with mirrors approximately 5times bigger....ie 400mm by about 4m He used an ingenious method to rotate the mirrors to track the sun. On the end of each mirror was a rod with two floats attached. Each float went into a bucket of water. A water pump would pump water from one bucket to the other and in this would rotate the mirror to track the sun. This is what I'd do if I made a large version.
