You can then change the amount of gaussian blur at anytime by making adjustments in the smart filter gaussian blur. You can then paint on the skin smoothening effect using a brush on the layer mask. You can reveal and conceal the effect by adding or removing parts of the mask. The drawback is that you must have the same amount of gaussian blur across the whole smart object layer. That can cause trouble near edges or other detailed areas of the image. Frequency separation method 3. You work in a smart object layer and use SURFACE BLUR for frequency separation and not gaussian blur. The advantage of using surface blur is that you will get more blur on large open areas and less blur near edges and parts of the image with a lot of details.
