Herman Bellstedt: Napoli

Hermann Bellstedt (1858–1926) was a legendary cornet virtuoso of the "Golden Age" of American bands, and "Napoli" (Canzone Napolitana con Variazioni) remains his most famous legacy. The core of "Napoli" is based on the famous Neapolitan song "Funiculì, Funiculà," composed by Luigi Denza in 1880. The original song was written to celebrate the opening of the first funicular railway on Mount Vesuvius. Bellstedt took this lighthearted, energetic melody and transformed it into a world-class theme and variations. I have decided to perform Wynton Marsalis cadenza in this piece which is very difficult because of the high notes, therefore I'm performing it on the trumpet, not cornet.
