(17 Nov 1999) Voice and effects VOICED BY: Richard Vaughan Commemorating the 10th anniversary of then-Czechoslovakia's Velvet Revolution, former world leaders have been honoured in Prague for their efforts to topple communism across eastern Europe. Former U-S President George Bush received an honorary doctorate in philosophy from Prague's renowned Charles University for the key role he played in bringing down the Iron Curtain in 1989. VOICE-OVER: 0003 It's ten years since the fall of Communism in what was then Czechoslovakia. 0007 And what is now the Czech Republic has seen many changes since. 0011 But the transition has not been an easy one. 0014 SOUNDBITE: (English) "I think many people are disappointed because they desire to get rich easily and that's why they must be disappointed." SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop, Man 0024 SOUNDBITE: (English) "I think it's pretty sad that people are voting for the Communists. I definitely would never vote for Communists, so it's kind of sad. People don't realise that every change needs time and needs trying and hard work." SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop, Woman 0041 In the Czech capital Prague, former world leaders were honoured for their efforts to topple communism across eastern Europe. 0048 Recipients included former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, former U-S President George Bush, ex-German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. 0056 Also honoured, the man whose Solidarity union helped topple Poland's communist regime, Lech Walesa. 0104 Czech President Vaclav Havel will later award orders of high state to Bush and six other leading political figures of the time. 0110 Nine years ago, Bush became the first U-S president to visit Czechoslovakia in the post-communist era.
