Reacting Nickel Sulfide (NiS) / spontaneous breakage can be an important safety measure and cost mitigator for both tempered and heat strengthened glass. Why is reacting NiS important at architectural glass sizes? At these sizes, the likelihood of NiS is higher based on the amount of glass used combined with the added risk of glass spontaneously breaking at retail storefronts or in a structural assembly. Failure in these circumstances carries the added cost of removal, fabrication, and reinstallation. How do we limit the risk of spontaneous breakage due to NiS? The act of heat treating glass alters the state (size) of these tiny particles, which are sometimes present in glass from the float process. Unfortunately, NiS longs to return to its original state, and in doing so can exert immense force within the strained glass, causing spontaneous breakage. Heat Soak Testing is used to react these particles in the safety of a specialty oven, rather than out in the field, and is an effective way to further mitigate NiS risks. #glass #glazing #fabrication #glassfactory #glassfacades #facades #tempering #annealing #architecturalglass #architecture #glassprocessing #GlassGlazing #GlassFabrication #HeatSoakTesting #NiSReaction
