Ana Josefa Pérez florido (conocida más tarde con el nombre de Madre Petra de San José) nació el 7 de diciembre de 1845. Después de vivir cinco años dedicada al servicio de los ancianos más necesitados de Valle de Abdalajís, fundó en Málaga la Congregación de Madres Desamparados y San José de la Montaña en 1880. Su primitiva comunidad fundacional estuvo formada por tres vallesteras más: Frasquita Bravo Muñoz (Madre Magdalena de San José), su hermana Isabel Bravo Muñoz (Madre Natividad de San José), y Rafaela Conejo Muñoz (Madre Trinidad de San José). La primera y la tercera sucedieron a Madre Petra, al frente de la Congregación. Después de haber fundado diez Casas, enferma y agotada por su entrega sin límites a los demás, especialmente a los más necesitados, la Madre Petra murió en Barcelona el 16 de agosto de 1906. Su fama de santidad y los muchos favores atribuidos a su interseción dieron lugar a la apertura de su Proceso de Beatificación y Canonización en 1932. El 14 de junio de 1971 el Papa Pablo Sexto aprueba sus virtudes heróicas; y el 16 de octubre de 1994, fue beatificada en Roma por el Papa Juan Pablo Segundo. La Congregación, extendida hoy por España, por Italia y por siete países de América, ejerce su labor apostólica y social en Residencias para ancianos necesitados, hogares para niños con problemas familiares, colegios, residencias para estudiantes, casas en países de misiones, guarderías y casas de espiritualidad. El Convento y Residencias de Ancianos de Valle de Abdalajís fueron fundados en 1917 en la Casa donde nació Madre Petra, por la también vallestera Madre Trinidad de San José. Hoy es un edificio totalmente remodelado y acondicionado que alberga, en condiciones óptimas, a más de 70 ancianos.
