முழங்காலில் எலியா? | Mouse in the knee joint? | Dr Shriram Krishnamoorthy

முழங்காலில் எலியா? |Mouse in the knee joint? | Dr #Shriram Krishnamoorthy #kneepain #losebody #kneelocking Mouse in the knee, that is, a sensation similar to a mouse moving inside the knee. If we consider the literal meaning it will not make sense. But what this conveys is, in the knee, similar to a mouse's movement, a free fragment in movement is called 'mouse in the knee joint'. Here what we try to refer to is the term 'loose body'. The loose body gets dislodged from the main tissue, floats freely in your joint and gets locked in one place. So, as we have seen earlier, in the anatomy of the knee joint, there are bones, ligaments, cartilage and meniscus. If any of these parts gets injured, from the main fragment the piece gets detached. Once detached, inside the knee joint it floats freely. When it floats, and when you bend the knee, in some place it could get locked. When we say that it gets locked, it will not be possible to stretch beyond a point or bend beyond that point. It would be fixed in a place. At times when elderly people have this issue, it gets locked and before taking the next step, there is a chance for them to have a fall. So, how can we find this out? you walk and when you walk it gets automatically locked, and when you stop and try to twist the knee, the fragment that flows freely, will move. Once it has moved, your knee will return to its normal position. We cannot say when it can go back to its normal position and when it could get relieved. So, such a problem is referred to as 'loose body'. What can be done about this loose body? First when you see a doctor, they will examine you. They will check where it is getting locked. Is it getting locked repeatedly in the same place or is it getting locked in different places every time? This needs to be checked. This is very very important because most of the information can be gotten from this point alone. Secondly, it is the X-rays and MRIs, because as we had told earlier, there are many anatomical parts. From which part has this fragment come from is what we need to find first. Finally, we are going to do a keyhole surgery, arthroscope. When doing that, the fragment that is floating freely can be removed. Secondly, wherever it came from that main problem can also be addressed. So, do not panic if you have locking episodes. Last week we looked at slipping. Whereas, this is more like a locking episode. So if it gets locked, you need not panic. It can be either a fixed hole, that is, similar to a meniscal tear it could get locked repeatedly in the same place. Else, as the second option, it could move, getting locked in a new position every time just like a mouse in the knee which we also call, loose body.
