Sukhothai Historical Park (Central Park Area), Thailand 00:00 Sukhothai Sukhothai was the capital of the first Thai kingdom, usually called the Sukhothai Kingdom, hence the modern city is often called New Sukhothai. 00:23 Sukhothai National Park Sukhothai Historical Park covers the ruins of Sukhothai, literally 'dawn of happiness', capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom in the 13th and 14th centuries, in north central Thailand. It is near the city of Sukhothai, capital of Sukhothai Province. The city's walls form a rectangle about 2 km east-west by 1.6 km north-south. There are 193 ruins on 70 km2 of land. There is a gate in the centre of each wall. Inside are the remains of the royal palace and twenty-six temples, the largest being Wat Mahathat. 00:52 Wat Mahathat This temple was considered the most important royal temple in the Sukhothai Kingdom and can be found in the very middle of the central zone surrounded by a moat and brick wall. Wat Mahathat is one of, if not the most impressive Sukhothai temple and is guaranteed to take your breath away. There is a viharn in front, and in the east of the pond, there is an Island with an ubosot. This edifice has already crumbled and only its pedestal and laterite columns still remain.
