MARGHERITA D’ANJOU Melodramma semiseria in 2 atti Composer: Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791–1864) Libretto: Felice Romani, after Réné Charles Guilbert de Pixérécourt First performance : La Scala, Milan, 14 November 1820 No. 7 - Finale: ‘Fra quest'ombre’ Margaret of Anjou’s army has been defeated by the Yorkist forces led by the Duke of Gloucester. The Duke of Lavarenne, his wife Isaura (disguised as a man) and her French doctor Michele wander around a dense forest. The Highlanders lie in wait to murder Margaret, but Carlo Belmonte – a banished Lancastrian general now serving the House of York – reveals himself, vows his allegiance to the queen, and orders his men to do likewise. The Highlanders will lead the Yorkist forces astray, while the queen, disguised as a peasant woman, will stay in Carlo’s cottage. As Gloucester’s forces draw near, the Lancastrians hope that heaven will keep them safe.
