Texas Children's Open Fetal Surgery for Sacrococcygeal Teratoma: Macie's Story

When Macie McCartney's routine ultrasound revealed a grapefruit-sized tumor, called sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT), attached to her tailbone, she was given only a 10% chance of survival. To save Macie' life, Texas Children's Fetal Center operated an open fetal surgery on Macie at 25 weeks gestation. The tumor is removed without taking the fetus from the uterus. Afterward, the uterus and abdomen are closed, and the fetus continues to develop. Macie was born ten weeks after the surgery and was discharged from Texas Children’s Hospital in June 2008 with no signs or indications that she endured such a life-threatening experience.
