I am the Company Secretary of the Plantsman Producer Organisation - which is a grower-owned cooperative. We have six members, all top- and soft-fruit growers. We use the Dolav bins for picking collecting and storing the fruit so they serve multi-purposes. They are great for handling in the orchard on our picking trains and then they go straight into the stores and where they are stored for long-term storage. The reason we us the bins is because they are very long-lasting. We have been using them for the last thirty years. They are easy to handle. They are light so that saves on transport. They are easy to clean. They actually prevent cross-contamination and they are just great for storing and stacking. The Dolav bins are ideal for long term storage because they stack so well. They have got these special grooves that stack on top of each other so you can actually stack them higher than wooden bins and much more safely. The other advantage of Dolav bins is that they are made of recyclable plastic which is an advantage over wood because obviously a wooden bin will only last five years. The benefits of the hail netting is not only to protect the crop but we have enclosed the sides of the orchards so we have reduced the summer pests like Codling Moth and that means we don’t have to spray and use as many chemicals - so that’s a win-win for everybody. With the help of European grant funding, for the last three years, we have been able to purchase the Dolavs with fifty-percent grant and that means for the future we are also going to be buying bins – about a thousand a year . We supply supermarkets; Sainsburys and Morrisons. We also have a contract with the School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme whereby all four- to six-year old primary school children get a free piece of fruit every day. And we store the fruit over six months in controlled atmosphere stores where lower the oxygen, increase the carbon dioxide so that fruit does not respire and they are kept in limbo so they don’t ripen and they can be stored for longer. The state-of-the-art intensive orchards are yielding fifty to sixty tonnes a hectare whereas the old-style extensive orchards would only yield about fifteen to twenty tonnes a hectare. So with the help of the European grants we are increasing our yields and lowering our productions costs. Well we have got about one hundred hectares of fruit of which thirty-three percent has been replanted and we are on a programme of replanting the rest of the areas – over the years.
