Renowned for its unique trapezoidal architecture and fish-like sculptures, it represents a pivotal transition from Mesolithic hunter-gatherer to Neolithic, early urban life. Мирољубиви „лепенски“ аласи су ову локацију пажљиво бирали, и ту оформили културу која је трајала читавих две хиљаде година у континуитету, и то у периоду 6500-4500 год. п. н. е. До открића локалитета Лепенски Вир, дошло је током опсежних истраживања у Ђердапу која су вршена због изградње хидроелектране Ђердап I.
