What To Say & What Not To Say To A Woman Hiking Alone In an effort to stop the limiting belief that the outdoors is not a safe place for women, let’s talk about the right way and wrong way to engage with women hiking alone. Whenever you come across a woman hiking alone, it’s totally fine to say hello, but keep it casual. Things PERFECTLY OKAY to say to a woman hiking alone: Hello! How are you? How’s your hike? How are the trail conditions? Seen any wildlife? * Got any break spot recommendations? Things NOT OKAY to say to a woman hiking alone; Aren’t you scared to hike alone? Isn’t it dangerous to be out here by yourself? * Where’s your boyfriend/husband? Do you carry a weapon? * Why don’t you carry a gun? 9 times out of 10 you probably wouldn’t ask a man hiking alone any of these questions, so why would you ask a woman? Asking ANYONE hiking alone, no matter what their gender is, any of these questions is completely inappropriate! Don’t ask intrusive questions. Don’t be overly concerned about our safety or imply that we shouldn’t be hiking alone. Assume that we are capable, have done our research and planning, have everything we need and that we don’t need your help or concern, unless we ask. And if we decide NOT to engage back with you and keep on hiking, that’s okay too. Don’t get offended. Sometimes, we just want to be left alone and not talk to anyone while we’re out there. And ladies, never feel like you need to explain why you’re out on trail by yourself to anyone if they ask. It’s none of their business unless you truly want to share that information. PS: I love meeting other hikers out on trail and will happily stop and chat with most of the people I meet out there, but can we just stop with these weird, intrusive questions please?
