The blast caused extensive damage to the house. The motive behind the attack in the residential neighbourhood was unclear, but tensions have risen between Sunni and Shiite Muslims in the wake of the bombing of a revered Shiite shrine in Samarra on Wednesday. The shrine bombing triggered reprisals by Shiites against Sunnis, leading to a wave of sectarian violence that has killed more than 190 people since Wednesday. An extraordinary daylight curfew was in effect for the second day running in Baghdad and three surrounding provinces. It was lifted at 1600 local time (1300 GMT) in most areas, but the government announced a 24-hour ban on vehicular movements in Baghdad and its suburbs starting at 0600 Sunday local time (0300 GMT). Despite the extra measures, the stretched security forces could not be everywhere to contain the attacks. In a bid to show solidarity between Iraqis, Sunni and Shiite Muslims gathered to perform joint prayers at the al-Qiba mosque northern Baghdad. Outside, members of the al-Mahdi army, the Shiite militia belonging to the Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, guarded the entrance to the mosque. Many Shiites fear Iraq's official security forces are incapable of protecting them and instead look to private militias for security.
