The latest incarnation of Orkney Folk Festival’s evolving showcase for home-grown musical talent, originally created for Scotland’s Year of Young People in 2018, gives centre stage to the new generations of Orkney musicians currently emerging on the islands, and making waves on the wider folk scene. Curating and anchoring the show are rising stars Gnoss, whose original Orcadian duo of fiddler/mandolinist Graham Rorie and singer-guitarist Aidan Moodie won a Danny Kyle Open Stage Award in 2015. Nowadays a quartet, also featuring flute, whistles and bodhran, they’re joined in the spotlight tonight by the ever-intoxicating treble fiddles/piano and lush harmony vocals of Fara, performing tracks from their new second album, Times From Times Fall, and award-winning harpist Jessica Burton. Orkney fiddle powerhouse Douglas Montgomery leads a 30-strong, multiinstrumental squad from his celebrated youth project Hadhirgaan, while other elder guests, in the ‘house band’ and playing solo, include Kris Drever, peerless moothie-playing raconteur Billy Jolly, and members of The Chair.
