5 Scientific Ways to Solve MCQs | How to guess in Exams | Elimination Method Explained Can you guess answers in MCQ exams scientifically? In UPSC Prelims 2025, one of my friends got 10 questions correct through intelligent guessing. This raises an important question: Is it just luck, or is there a science behind MCQ guessing? In this video, Dr. Sandeep Singh (PhD, JNU) explains 5 proven techniques based on 10 years of teaching and exam experience that can help you make smart guesses in MCQ-based exams. These techniques work not only for UPSC, but also for: NEET IIT-JEE SSC NET/JRF Banking exams Any MCQ-based competitive exam In highly competitive exams, the difference between selection and failure is often just 1–2 marks. Smart guessing can make that difference. Why Smart Guessing Matters in Competitive Exams In exams like UPSC Prelims, the cutoff usually stays around 90–95 marks. Sometimes: One correct guess → selection One wrong guess → elimination That is why understanding MCQ strategies and probability is extremely important. Good guesswork is not random guessing. It is based on logic, elimination, and pattern recognition. 5 Scientific Methods to Guess MCQ Answers 1️⃣ Elimination Method This is the most powerful strategy. Even if you don’t know the correct answer, try to eliminate clearly incorrect options. Example: If a question is about the Indian Freedom Movement and one option refers to a person from the 1980s or Mughal period, you can eliminate it immediately. Probability changes like this: 4 options → 25% chance After eliminating 2 options → 50% chance In negative marking exams, a 50% probability question is worth attempting. 2️⃣ Middle Value Method Paper setters often include extreme options to distract students. Example: If the correct answer is around 1931, options may look like: 1920 1927 1931 1945 The extreme values (1920 and 1945) are often wrong. The correct answer usually lies closer to the middle values. Also watch for extreme words like: Always Never All Completely These are often incorrect in UPSC-style questions. 3️⃣ Language Analysis Method The correct answer usually has clear and precise language. When examiners create questions: They ensure the correct answer is perfectly written Distractor options may contain vague or incomplete statements So compare the options carefully: Which option is more precise? Which statement is clearly articulated? Which one looks less vague? Often the most logically written statement is correct. 4️⃣ Solve the Paper Using Other Questions Sometimes the answer to one question is hidden in another question. For example: If two questions are about Parliament, one question may indirectly reveal information useful for another question. This is why reading the entire paper carefully can help. Many toppers solve 2–3 questions using clues from the same paper. 5️⃣ Gut Feeling (Instinct) Your brain processes enormous information while studying. Even if you don’t consciously remember something, your subconscious memory may recognize patterns. Often the first instinctive answer has a higher probability of being correct. But this works only if you have studied the topic before. Gut feeling should be used after elimination and logical thinking, not randomly. Important Warning These techniques are not for random guessing. They should be used only when you cannot confidently answer the question. First try to solve using knowledge. If unsure, apply these five methods systematically. Final Advice for MCQ Exams To improve your accuracy: ✔ Practice elimination techniques ✔ Identify extreme options ✔ Analyze language carefully ✔ Use clues from other questions ✔ Trust informed intuition When used properly, these techniques can help you gain 3–5 extra correct answers, which can be the difference between success and failure.
