The sculpture depicts a giant needle with a multi-colored thread and a knot that appears in a fountain in another part of the square. The work, created by Claes Oldenburg, an artist of Swedish origin, and Kosje van Bruggen, born in Holland, was unveiled in 2000 in Piazzale Cadorna, as part of the reconstruction of the Cadorna railway station and the square on which it stands. The place for the sculpture was not chosen by chance. The Piazza is an important hub in urban transport and is where the Ferrovie Nord rail system reaches the city centre. The sculpture expresses a double symbolism: the three colors (red, green and yellow) represent the three lines of Milan's metro system, while the needle and thread are a tribute to Milan's work in the fashion sector.
