(27 Oct 1996) English/Nat QUALITY AS INCOMING U-S Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole, who's still trailing in the polls, took his campaign to the fertile central valley of California on Saturday. His whistlestop tour through this region is aimed at securing key votes in this traditionally Republican state. The Republican hopeful launched his go-for-broke drive for California's 54 electoral votes by hitting the state's hot issues of illegal immigration and affirmative action. And he appeared undaunted by state wide polls that put Clinton as many as 20 points ahead. In Stockton Dole called on Clinton to "confess" to administration problems and ask the American people to show mercy and forgiveness. Late in the day, Dole urged the president to "confess" on television his administration's mistakes. "You ought to ask for mercy," Dole beckoned to Clinton from Merced, California. And in Stockton, he taunted the president for his veto of a ban on some late-term abortions. "It's virtually taking a life," Dole said in pledging to outlaw the procedure. But Dole is still attempting to project a positive campaign image. SOUNDBITE: (English): "Q: When you do this, what does it do for you in terms of the sense of how the campaign is going, when you talk to people, when you look them in the eye, What do you think? A: We've had six today, I think this is our sixth stop today. We've had big, enthusiastic crowds. I think a whole lot of people are beginning to focus. I think there is a lot of concern, this is what keeps you going. There is opportunity there, we're out talking about our economic plan, we're talking about public ethic, not private ethic, public ethic. So we feel good about it."
