Ever found yourself frozen over the golf ball, your mind buzzing with so many thoughts that your swing becomes stiff, and your shot goes wayward? That’s what Jim McLean calls a “Death Move”, and there are 21 of these moves that can completely wreck your golf swing! Jim writes about all 21 Death Moves in his book, "The 8-Step Swing". In the first of this 3-part series, Justin Klemballa, who was mentored by McLean himself, discusses the first 7 of these 21 death moves in golf, starting with the paralysis of overthinking. Make sure you tune in since we don’t just call out these mistakes, but provide actionable tips and strategies to ensure you avoid making them going forward. We've all seen it, maybe even done it — moving our head towards the target as we swing. It's a rather common misstep that can lead to what's known as a reverse pivot in the downswing. Justin and I delve into the reasons behind this prevalent error and provide a handy shadow drill for rectifying it. But it's not just about the head movement; overextending your backswing, failing to engage your hips, or having too “armsy” or "handsy" a backswing can throw off your entire game. We explore how rotating the hands in a clockwise position can open the clubface too much, prompting a state of recovery in your swing. On the other hand, we also go through the pitfalls of having the clubface being too closed. To wrap up, we tackle the seventh death move — an open club face at the top of the swing. It's a common error among slicers, often resulting in a low left hook. We'll walk you through the differences between a square face and an open face at the top of the swing and explain how a cupped left wrist can prompt the face to open.
