Join us in this detailed session with Jai Singh, a pioneering farmer from Bahraich district in Uttar Pradesh, as he shares expert tips and techniques for successful potato farming. With over 40 years of hands-on experience in cultivating potatoes and bananas, Jai Singh has refined his methods to maximise crop health and yield, making him a highly respected figure in the agricultural community. 1. Land Preparation According to Mr. Singh Preparation is key to success, Jai Singh prepares his fields meticulously after his banana harvest. He recommends using a rotavator thrice to ensure moisture retention and fine-tune the soil structure. After rotavating, he applies 500–600 cubic feet of organic manure (cow dung compost) per acre to enrich the soil. 2. Creating Beds For proper drainage and to maintain optimal moisture levels, beds are crafted at about 11 inches above ground level. A cultivator is used for this, with a gentle leveller attached to ensure an even surface, which aids in seed placement and irrigation efficiency. 3. Optimal Sowing Time Primary Window: October 21–28 Secondary Window: October 28–November 5 Final Window: November 5–10 Sowing during this period ensures favourable conditions for potato growth and minimises stress on the crop. 4. Selecting & Treating Seeds Jai Singh advises choosing high-quality, disease-free seed potatoes, each weighing around 40–50 grams. For each acre, approximately 30,000 tubers (12–15 quintals) are needed. Seed treatment is crucial to prevent early diseases: Treatment Steps: Spray Emesto prime on seeds, then treat with Daythan M45 and Plaster of Paris. Drying: Allow treated seeds to dry in a shaded area to ensure safe and effective planting. 5. Controlled Irrigation First irrigation should be just enough to reach one-third of the bed height (about 35%), which supports healthy germination. After December 15, focus on canopy coverage for better growth. Proper irrigation management prevents water wastage and promotes healthier plants. 6. Fertilisation Strategy NPK (12:32:16): 3 bags per acre Urea: 1 bag initially, with another application after 45 days Magnesium & Zinc: 20 kg each per acre This balanced fertilisation boosts plant strength and increases yield potential.
