Spring pitch plays a big role in how stiff a spring is and how much force it takes to compress it. In today’s video, we’ll explain how spring pitch impacts spring rate, especially in progressive springs where pitch and rate change along the length. What is Spring Pitch? Spring pitch is the distance between the center of one coil's wire and the center of the next coil's wire. What is Spring Gap? Spring gap is the space between the coils, from the top of one coil to the bottom of the coil above it. How Does the Pitch of a Spring Impact Its Rate? If a spring has the same wire diameter but different pitch, a larger pitch means fewer coils in a given length. This leads to less deflection under load, making the spring stiffer, and increasing its spring rate. Progressive Spring Pitch Explained Now, let’s look at progressive coil springs. In these springs, the pitch and rate change along the length. The coils start closely spaced, giving a softer rate, and gradually spread out, making the spring stiffer. As the spring compresses, the tighter coils go into coil bind, and the larger-pitched coils take over, resulting in a higher spring rate.
