In this unforgettable stealth camping adventure, I set out to spend the night on the rooftop of Rickwood Field- America's oldest professional baseball park-tucked away in the heart of Birmingham, Alabama's west side of town. Built in 1910, Rickwood Field has seen over a century of baseball history, legends, and stories echoing through its iron gates. Tonight, it becomes my temporary home under the stars. My mission? To stealth camp overnight without being noticed. Just urban stealth camping techniques, lightweight camping essentials, and an itch for something truly unique. As I ascend to my camping location you will get an up close look at the beautiful architecture, with its classic bleachers, iron structure, 1938 Light standards and original style signage. Once inside, the field stretches out like a forgotten dream-still, quiet and just out of reach of the glow of the city lights. After a stealthy climb to the rooftop of the grandstands, I rest on the perch with a panoramic view of the diamond below and the city skyline of Birmingham in the distance. As I relax with dinner and gaze out over the field, it’s hard not to imagine the games, cheers, and legends from Satchel Paige, Babe Ruth - Hank Arron and Willie Mays to the southern league teams that once called Rickwood Home. I’ll talk about the ethics and responsibility of stealth camping, in and around historic sites and of course leaving no trace.
