"Don't Come Around Here No More" by Tom Petty performed by Petty Or Not & Twisted Gypsy at Ventura Music Hall — World Premiere of 'Fleetwood Mac vs. Tom Petty: A Musical Showdown' Fleetwood Mac vs. Tom Petty: Even the Losers Get Lucky Sometimes Ventura Music Hall, Ventura, CA – December 5, 2025 In the pantheon of rock 'n' roll what-ifs, few rival the cosmic flirtation between Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty—a witchy siren chasing a rock rebel, forever teasing the edges of collaboration without fully igniting the powder keg. What if Stevie had crashed the Heartbreakers' "boys' club?" What if her scarves tangled with his Rickenbacker? On a balmy Friday night at Ventura Music Hall, that tantalizing alternate universe exploded into existence with the world premiere of 'Fleetwood Mac vs. Tom Petty: A Musical Showdown', a Vegas-style spectacle pitting Twisted Gypsy (Fleetwood Mac tribute) against Petty Or Not (Tom Petty tribute) in a battle royale mashup of two timeless catalogs. This was a 'fever-dream' jukebox musical, scripted with sly wit, narrated by archival clips, and animated with cute cartoon versions of Stevie and Tom, that had the packed house howling with 'Full Moon Fever'. From the dramatic THX sound effect at the start of the show, the audience was drawn in. The giant screen flickered with grainy '80s footage: Tom Petty is shown in a vintage interview telling how Stevie Nicks hounded him to join the Heartbreakers, only for him to shoot back, "Yeah, that’s good, Stevie, but there aren’t any girls in The Heartbreakers." The bands alternate "rounds" of four-song mini-sets like boxers in a ring, each one using the songs to build narrative tension, all culminating in the fifth "round" finale when both bands come together in harmony. This show elevates tribute art to high-wire excitement—and proves that these icons of classic rock are alive, kicking, and ready to rumble. Twisted Gypsy opens the show with Round 1: a velvet-gloved assault of "The Chain" that locked the room in hypnotic groove, followed by the ethereal sway of "Gypsy," the synth-pop sparkle of "Everywhere," and a thunderous "Stand Back." Petty Or Not counters in Round 2 with "Runnin' Down a Dream" as their opener. "I Won't Back Down" can be interpreted as a playful-but-firm refusal to let Stevie into the Heartbreakers, and then "The Waiting" was prefaced with "Tom" saying "Stevie" would be waiting a long time to join the Heartbreakers (like, forever!). They close the set with the beloved sing-along "Free Fallin'." Twisted Gypsy reclaims the ring in Round 3 with the upbeat favorite "You Make Loving Fun," into the soothing pulse of "Dreams," a passionate and powerful "Edge of Seventeen," and the anthemic farewell of "You Can Go Your Own Way." Petty Or Not fires back in Round 4, stripping it down to essentials: a resigned but cool "Breakdown," the defiant "Refugee," a haunting "Mary Jane's Last Dance," and the epic rocker "American Girl." Round 5 delivers the knockout twist—foes become family. Both bands converge for a supergroup summit—"Don't Come Around Here No More" slinking in psychedelic, magical splendor, "Don't Stop [Thinking About Tomorrow]" igniting an optimistic fire, the Stevie/Tom duet "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" (introduced using a clever pun), and a spellbinding “Rhiannon” that brought the night triumphantly home. The show concludes with a Warner Bros.-style "That's All Folks!" clip as the crowd cheers in delight. 'Fleetwood Mac vs. Tom Petty' dares to dream bigger: a love letter to what could have been, wrapped in the hits that defined what was. Twisted Gypsy and Petty Or Not make you wonder "what if?" What if the Heartbreakers opened the door for the gypsy queen? Five stars, no asterisks.
