War and violence have always been with us, despite our experience of some decades of comparative peace, we have always been beset by the storms of life. And sadly today, black clouds of intolerance, bitterness, greed and indifference to the suffering of others are gathering and deepening. An ominous warning sign, like the outbreak of bush fires all around us is the slow death of truth. No society – no civil society can hope to live without it, and yet daily it is under assault from those, who at least in the past, paid some lip service to its defence – however tarnished the world of global politics has always been. Hannah Arnedt, was a German-American political theorist, renowned for her deep insights into power, evil, and totalitarianism. She was deeply affected by her experiences as a Jewish refugee fleeing Nazi Germany, and her work often centred on the fragility of truth in the face of oppressive regimes. In her last interview in 1974 she said the following: “What makes it possible for a totalitarian or any other dictatorship to rule is that people are not informed; how can you have an opinion if you are not informed? .....If everybody always lies to you, the consequence is not that you believe the lies, but rather that nobody believes anything any longer. And a people that no longer can believe anything cannot make up its mind. It is deprived not only of its capacity to act but also of its capacity to think and to judge. And with such a people you can then do what you please." The tragedy of our present time, is that many leaders in our world, and their enablers, do not fear the truth of that statement; they are counting on it. Part of the Church of Ireland, St Nicholas Church, Adare and its fellow churches teaches and ministers within the progressive Christianity tradition, with influences from the scholars who built on the work of the Jesus Seminar. It seeks to be a church that is welcoming and inclusive, affirming and open in its liberal theology; and whilst we don’t claim to have all the answers, we are most certainly committed to ‘living the questions’. We have influences of Celtic spirituality in our worship and view of the natural world, living as we do in the beauty of County Limerick. The Church of Ireland also forms part of the Anglican communion which is an association of Anglican churches from 38 provinces, including the Church of England, the Scottish Episcopal Church, the Church in Wales, the Episcopal Church in the USA (otherwise known as the Episcopalians) and churches across the globe. With 80 million members, it is the third largest Christian body in the world, after the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches.
