Garbeta, West Bengal: while walking and sweating like in hell as temperature was close to 42 degree Celsius, we suddenly found a huge footprint on the red soil road. Asking the rickshaw puller, he replied "that's a footprint of an elephant" Feeling a bit scared, it then come to my mind one could have met big elephants with no rescue near me!!! But let me tell you the story from its beginning: After a short trip to Bishnupur at Bankura District, we boarded to a local train to Kharagpur to reach home. As it was Monday and no rush office hours, we did not book seats. We decided to get down to Garbeta, 25km from Bishnupur Town and wait for the next coming train. Checking the time schedule showed us that we had 2 hours free before the train to come. How to find something to do with 2 hours? We asked some local peoples about what nearby tourist destinations to spend that free time. All suggested us to go Gongoni, 5km away from the railway station. We decided to hire two rickshaws and started our journey to the mystery land of Gongoni. Garbeta is an important village town in West Midnapore. The village was very restless few years ago due to political crisis, but now the entire area is very peaceful. We crossed Garbeta College and took the red laterite soil road on our left, where a pillar indicates you about Gongoni. We had to watch out because the zigzag road is so muddy due to heavy rain earlier. Then we felt literally astonished by what we saw! What an amazing place! You don't need to go Arizona in United States to see Grand Canyon. Here stands Gongoni with its magnificent beauty, while the beautiful Shilabati River flows down with bunch of white Kash Grass on its riverbed. Gongoni is considered as a gorge and it's 100 times smaller than the Grand Canyon but you have to keep in mind that such landscapes are very very uncommon in Eastern India, so, locals consider it as a large canyon. From Gongoni Gorge's cliff you can be delighted by an entire 180 degree gorgeous view. I am quite sure that after having seen that you will ask yourself if the word gorgeous is derived from "gorge"? And the answer is definitely "Yes". Because, you can be find gorgeous things only at a gorge! We started to walk down to the stone staircase, a really amazing place where you can see a few small water streams here and there. Just follow them; every bend is waiting for you with a new surprise. From the riverbed of Shilabati, the gorge looked even more gorgeous. The Earth made this place with her own hand. You can see almost all examples of different type of soil erosion at this place. Nature meets with the Mother Earth here. It makes numerous structures by its own hand, which is out of reach of human activities and thus free of any alteration. Some looked like a natural hanging stage and some like the lobby of Titanic. Raise your hands and scream, it gives you heavenly feelings! Some areas of Gongoni looked like ruins of heritage series of temples. Surprisingly, they are not human made. Each and everything was made by Nature. At Gongoni you can see the magic of soil erosion at its best. They built caves also. Words are not enough for Gongoni. It's better to go there and taste the supernatural environment. I'm going again, do you come? Article by: Sujay Ghatak Link: http://moongo.in/travel-story/Gongoni...
