SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Alexander Lukashenko, President of Belarus "I will of course recognise a victory of any of alternative candidates, my competitors. But only if they win. I'd like them to do the same if the incumbent president wins. If I were to win I hope they will recognise that. You must agree, it would a right thing to do." 19. Cutaway of election officials 20. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Alexander Lukashenko, President of Belarus "He (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe chief in Belarus, Hans-Georg Wieck) will leave here himself, I think. He's a reasonable man, and he headed such a secret service. What, he doesn't understand what is going on? His attacks on the eve of elections...He must have understood himself that he needs to go... He must fulfill the people's will, and if he doesn't do so, we will help him." 21. Lukashenko speaks to media 22. Polling station where main opposition candidate Vladimir Goncharik votes 23. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Vladimir Goncharik, presidential candidate and trade union leader "This is a continuation of Lukashenko's policy to make ballot counting more difficult. (limiting the amount of international observers monitoring the elections) That is why they have done so." 27. Goncharik speaks to reporters STORYLINE: Voters in isolated Belarus cast ballots on Sunday in an election that will decide whether President Alexander Lukashenko, an autocratic, energetic leader pilloried by the West who is keen to reunite his nation with Russia, will be re-elected. Lukashenko is widely expected to win, despite an increasingly strong challenge from trade union leader, Vladimir Goncharik. Goncharik supporters have predicted widespread vote fraud. Goncharik, casting his ballot with his wife Liliya, said he was confident of a victory. Lukashenko, voting at the Minsk Sports Academy, dismissed allegations of vote fixing and talk that the election might not be recognized by the West. "Our elections do not need anybody's recognition," he said. "There is no such thing in the legislation as Western recognition." At polling stations, stands had been set up with inexpensive sandwiches, cookies, cakes, soft drinks and beer on offer. In the capital Minsk, authorities issued a special permit allowing the sale of hard liquor at the polls. Tensions in this former Soviet republic of 10 (m) million people situated between Russia and Poland have soared in the run-up to the vote, with police raids on independent media and Goncharik's campaign offices as well as accusations by former police agents that Lukashenko's government sponsored death squads to remove his critics.
