I fully understand why this 243 wasn’t track speed right here. These little hills on the W-Line aren’t so ‘little’ when you’ve only got 1 motor running with a decent amount of tonnage behind you. I'm pretty sure there was no Energy Management, as KCS units normally don't have these awful, buggy auto control programs. The engineer was throttling up & down pretty nicely in the distance, so that was fun to hear. The hills on the W-Line can be pretty consecutive going in both directions. It’s like a roller coaster ride. Shoutout to the crew running this 243! The engineer was friendly for the horn greeting, and the conductor gave me a wave from within the cab. Something else that I should mention, is that CPKC is paying back NS in horsepower hours. So far, the start of 2026 has been very colorful in my neck of the woods, and it's VERY welcome! Trains have already been having at least one KCS motor in their locomotive lash-ups. They often don't lead unfortunately due to having some sort of radio, PTC, or auto control issue. These KCS locomotives usually don't have TO/EM, and NS upper management has made TO/EM mandatory now on their trains. So, you can bet they'll make sure these KCS units don't lead if possible. Not having a radio or PTC is a no-go, so I can understand needing to find a new motor in these cases. Anyways, I hope the KCS units keep on coming. Maybe some more CP power can get thrown into the mix!
