So my wife likes having remote controls for lights and fans around the house, and sometimes the remotes stop working. That happened earlier this week and so as part of the diagnostics I tried to swap the timer/outlet that she was using with a new replacement unit that I had on the shelf from a few years ago when I bought extras. Well...the new one also did not work. So I had to swap other outlets around so the one she needed to use had a working unit and then I worked to diagnose the new one which was not working. Unfortunately it looks like I should have tested this unit after buying it and before keeping it as a spare, as it looks to have been broken from the factory due to not only bad solder joints, but some other issues as well. So I was able to diagnose at least two soldering problems, but even after trying to fix those the unit still would not work, so I cut it all up and put it into the recycle bin. Moral of the story is to try and remember to test units when they are bought as spares during the return period vs leaving it sit for years until you need it and find out it is broken prior to purchase while it is still in the package.
