“Pandangguhan” is often labeled as a “Traditional Folk Song,” but I find that hard to believe due to its multi-sectional complexity. Typically, folk songs are simple, with a single melody, yet Pandangguhan offers four distinct themes across four different sections. It feels more like a piece crafted for a specific purpose, perhaps for a composition or a dance performance. It’s also possible that these themes were taken from different songs and woven together, much like a rondalla piece for a town fiesta. Later, National Artist Levi “Mang Levi” Celerio added beautiful Tagalog lyrics that seamlessly fit these melodies. The Spanish influence in the music makes it a natural choice for classical guitar arrangements. I previously arranged and recorded this song for two guitars on my album Manila Galleon Guitar Music. Now, with age and experience, I feel less inclined to alter the essence of folk music. This new arrangement for solo guitar though virtuosic, stays closer to the song’s traditional spirit compared to my earlier interpretation. If you have any insights about the origins of this song, I’d love to hear them in the comments. Salamat po!
