Final Fantasy VIII Retrospective: A story about growing up and falling in love.

Final Fantasy VIII is a game I played back on my old PC in the year 2000. Having been blown away by its predecessor a couple of years before I couldn’t wait to dive in and uncover everything it had to offer. For all the fun I had playing it though, I can’t say that it had as powerful an impact on me as 7 and 9 did. It’s been a pleasure to come back and replay the Remaster though and while I’d say VIII is a flawed masterpiece, well it’s still a masterpiece. In this video I’ll be doing a full story recap with deeper analysis of the characters and themes. We’re going to be taking a deep look at Squall Leonhart, a troubled and emotionally immature young man, his unlikely team mates of Zell, Quistis, Irvine and his first love Rinoa. We’ll follow them on their adventure around the world, up to space and back and even into the far future as the battle to thwart the machinations of the time bending sorceress Ultimerica. We’ll also look at the game’s development and art direction, with interviews from director Yoshinori Kitase and lead artist Tetsuya Nomura and analyse the interesting but flawed junction and guardian force system that really seems to have polarised its audience.
