Today we just briefly take a look at why LLMs need to "think". The example we explore is treating Transformers like calculators, with the question: Can we train a transformer on a string like "22 + 34" and have it produce the answer "56"? Therefore it has to learn the mathematical relationships of numbers through the strings only! We quickly find out this is actually not possible, unless we force it to go through a sequence of reasoning steps! Socials!
