On the rocky banks of a gentle-moving waterway, in a landscape composed entirely of volcanic rocks and Juniper trees that smell like cat piss (Juniperus occidentalis), we cross a mosquito-swarmed river to find Northern California's only native species of Cactus - #Opuntia fragilis - in full bloom. This vicious little bastard grows as far East as Wisconsin, yet it's only occurrence in California consists of this small population in the Shasta Valley near a massive dormant volcano of the same name. Now, when imprisoned in a biogeography dungeon ™ of this sort, one must ask "How the shit did this disjunct population of this plant end up here?". Was it an errant seed that germinated after being deposited by a migrating shitting bird ten thousand years ago? Was a cladode (a cactus stem) attached to a shit-dreadlock of a species of now-extinct megafauna and it somehow dropped here, later establishing a colony? Or is this population all that's left of a once-larger and more widespread population that is now extinct due to the end of the ice age or the last two hundred years of human agriculture? Bonus footage includes #Ascelpias cordifolia and a Sphinx Moth Money Shot to soothe your homicidal thoughts. #Anemopsis californica makes an appearance in this vid, as well.
