THCV has been found at low levels in some cannabis plants. We sought to understand the genes involved in the pathway for production of cannabinoids like THCV and to develop genetic markers for breeding plants with high levels of THCV. The KR gene is a strong candidate for influencing THCV production. We found five additional genomic regions which, in combination with the KR-associated markers, explain variation in THCV cannabinoid production. We implemented these genetic markers in marker-assisted breeding to develop high THCV cultivars.
