Children and young adults with intellectual disability often show challenging behaviours, which can make routine blood tests outside of hospital settings difficult. Hospital Avoidance for Blood Tests in Intellectual Disability Care, a project in South Western Sydney Local Health District, developed a community-based, tiered blood collection service that focuses on patient centred care and equity. The first stage involved 14 children with severe behavioural challenges, resulting in 82% success across 17 school-based collection attempts. The project improved accessibility, enhanced patient outcomes and increased carer satisfaction. It also helped to reduce costs and has the potential to be scalable. This project is a finalist in the Health Equity category for the 2025 NSW Health Awards. The Health Equity category is proudly sponsored by LeasePLUS.
