It was designed for operations in challenging terrain, including swampy areas, deep snow cover, and vertical obstacles like boulders, stumps, tank traps, and hedgehogs. The enhanced mobility of this heavy tank was achieved by using a four-track suspension system. Attention was also given to protection against weapons of mass destruction. The tank was armed with a 130-mm M-65 gun with a partially mechanized ammunition loading system. The tank was developed from 1955 to 1959 by the design teams of the Kirov Plant (LKZ) and VNII-100 in Leningrad, under the leadership of L.S. Troyanov. In December 1959, the first prototype was manufactured at LKZ, and in May 1960, it underwent factory testing.
