At City Rail Link we are not only creating New Zealand’s first underground rail line, but we’re also building a social legacy into our station designs that will survive long after we’re gone. This design korero was gifted to the project by its Mana Whenua Forum and follows the Māori creation myth of Ranginui and Papatūānuku. Legend has it Rangi – the sky father – and Papa – the earth mother – were locked together in a lasting embrace until their son Tāne pushed them apart, allowing light into the world. Karanga-a-Hape Station’s design reflects this narrative by figuratively anchoring the earth and connecting to the heavens above. Reuben Kirkwood, nominated iwi artist, and Jessica Beagelman, architectural lead, have worked together with mana whenua to integrate narrative into the station design, all within the technical constraints of the station. The result will be a stunning station building that reflects the cultural and historical context of the surrounding area to be used and enjoyed by future generations.
