Track: Raga Purvi - Auchar, Vilumbit Ektal, Drut Ektal (compositions by Guru Jnan Prakash Ghosh, Gurudev Prasun Banerjee) from the album Early Evening Odyssey by Jonathan Kay & Ciro Montanari available here: https://jonathankay.bandcamp.com/albu... Jonathan Kay - Shrutiphone (modified tenor saxophone) & soprano saxophone Ciro Montanari - Tabla About the Shrutiphone: The Shrutiphone was developed to better express the subtle shrutis and nuances of North Indian music. This is a system of customized tone-hole rings and key height adjustors made on a Buffet Crampon S-1 tenor saxophone to refine the tuning of the instrument to the 'just' or ‘pure’ tuning system the Indian Ragas are based on. I have also spend the last 10 years developing the necessary techniques to properly express all of the nuances and ornaments the North Indian Raga music style demands, including the controlled bending between pitches (meend), hard hitting ornaments (gamak), as well as others (taan, alankart, murki etc) About the presentation: Under my Guruji, Pandit Shantanu Bhattacharyya, my training (talim) has been in both the vocal (gayaki) and instrumental (tantrakari) styles and stylistically ranges form dhrupad, khyal, thumri to dhun and other folk music forms. This recoding is based on the vocal format of bora khyal for Raga Purvi, and chota khyal for Raga Kedar. The last track, Mirror Image, is an original composition of mine that takes the western diminished scale (S r g G M P D n S’) and develops it in the form of instrumental North Indian Raga music of vilumbit and drut gats.
