Garbage and Garbage record book 💎 Garbage According to the Marpol Annex 5 agreement, which discusses the prevention of marine pollution through waste, including food waste, plastics, cargo residues, oil waste, electronic waste, generator waste, and more. It is prohibited to dump these wastes into the sea, and there are conditions regarding these dumping operations. 💎 Special areas: White Sea Black Sea Red Sea Baltic Sea North Sea Bay areas Wider Caribbean Sea, including the Gulf of Mexico Antarctic region 💎 The first thing the chief officer must do is ensure that the crew knows where the garbage station is and understands the color coding of each container. You cannot mix oils with food waste with wood, and so on. 💎 The green color is designated for food waste. 💎 The blue color is for paper, cardboard, and cartons. 💎 The red color is for plastic waste, fishing gear, nets, and ropes. 💎 The yellow color is for glass, metals, and cargo residues, among others. 💎 The black color is for ash waste. 💎 Dumping rules: Plastic materials are strictly prohibited from being dumped into the sea. Floating materials can be dumped 25 nautical miles from the nearest coast. Food materials and waste, glass, and cardboard can be dumped more than 12 nautical miles from the nearest coast. 💎 The chief officer and the second engineer must place these instructions in the salons, galley, and machinery spaces and alert all crew members, especially the cooks, about these instructions. 💎 When delivering these wastes at the port, you receive a certificate to be placed in the garbage record book, noting the type and quantity of waste. 💎 The Garbage Record Book It is divided into two parts: The first part is for all types of ships (All cargo ships). The second part is for ships that carry solid bulk cargoes. 💎 As soon as you open the book, you will find some guidelines regarding types of garbage, with each type having a letter, such as: A ➡️ Plastic B ➡️ Food waste C ➡️ Domestic waste D ➡️ Cooking oils E ➡️ Incinerator ashes F ➡️ Operational waste G ➡️ Animal carcasses H ➡️ Fishing gear I ➡️ E-waste The second part for solid bulk cargoes: J ➡️ Cargo residues (NON HME) K ➡️ Cargo residues (HME) 💎 After that, you'll find a table similar to the one in the picture below outlining: 💎 You will write the name of the vessel 💎 The call sign 💎 The IMO number 💎 Then, you'll find a table divided into several columns. 💎 The first column is for writing the date and time of waste delivery. Note: It is prohibited to dump any waste into the sea other than food residues, according to the dumping rules stipulated in the Marpol agreement. 💎 For example, if you delivered food residues either at the port or at sea, you write the date and time in the first column. 💎 The adjacent column will be for writing your location (Lat & Long) if at sea and the name of the port if on land. 💎 The type of garbage you dumped or delivered—if it's food waste, you write the letter B, and so on. 💎 The estimated quantity you dumped is typically written as 0.02 cubic meters. 💎 The last column is signed by the chief officer or captain. 💎 If you delivered at the port, the agent or person responsible for reception will provide you with a certificate detailing the quantities received and the type of each one. 💎 This certificate will contain the following: Date and time Agent name Ship name Call sign IMO number Gross tonnage Ship flag 💎 After receiving this certificate, you write in the book the time and date, the type, and quantities as per what is in the certificate, and then sign at the end. 💎 If there are items related to the machinery, designated by the letter E (incinerator ashes), the second engineer writes the approximate quantities and signs as well.
