Full length video available at patreon.com/VintageRailroadFilms The Newfoundland Railway was a narrow-gauge railway operating on the Canadian island of Newfoundland from 1898 to 1988. With a total track length of 906 miles (1,458 km), it was the longest 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) narrow-gauge system in North America.On March 31, 1949, the Newfoundland Railway was transferred into the federal government's Canadian National Railway. Canadian National introduced diesel locomotives and modernized the railway system on the island. The Newfoundland operations continued to see significant traffic increases with its improved ferry and rail connections, but faced increased truck and bus competition on completion of the Trans-Canada Highway across the island in 1965.In 1979 the Newfoundland Railway was reorganized as Terra-Transport, and operated as such until 1988 when the railroad was abandoned. Following the end of operations, some equipment was sold to Chile and others ended up as static displays in museums on the island and elsewhere. Much of the right-of-way was reincorporated as a rail trail. Today there is currently no active railroad presence anywhere on the island of Newfoundland. Filmed by Walter A. Martin in the early 1980s.
