Join us for the latest installment of the 2025 Save Our Seas Distinguished Speaker Series at the Museum of Discovery and Science. This talk featured Sophie Prendergast, PhD student at the Institute of the Sea, University of the Azores, on “Devil Rays in the Azores.” Prendergast shared research on the ecology, behavior and movement patterns of devil rays in the Azores, one of the world’s most significant hotspots for these migratory species. Her presentation highlighted the mounting pressures facing devil rays, including overfishing, habitat degradation and the impacts of changing ocean conditions. Her work examined how environmental shifts influence migration, aggregation and population stability. She also discussed the science-based conservation strategies being developed to protect these vulnerable rays while supporting long-term ocean health and sustainable fisheries.
