Nearly 90 years ago, my Grandfather, John Tattersall, took his 2 sons, Ian and Neil for a special Easter treat to Blackpool for the day. Fortunately for us, he took his cine camera with him to record the day out, because he wanted to upload his memories to YouTube. Unfortunately, he had forgotten that no-one had invented the internet, or the technology to upload cine film, so he left the task to his Grandson! The film has just been digitally remastered so you can now enjoy the sights and sounds of their day out 80+ years ago. It begins with the car journey from Lytham St.Annes, passing The Grand Hotel in St Annes. They also passed the future site of Pontin's, where a tram was heading towards St.Annes. As the car headed along South Promenade, we catch a glimpse of some of Blackpool's new trams. Then on to North Pier, which is crowded, despite a very blustery, hazy day. (Typical Bank Holiday) Following a scene showing The Winter Gardens viewed from Victoria Street, there is a trip up Blackpool Tower, and then some views from the top. On the way down, the crane, building the iconic clock tower on the new Woolworth Building, can just be seen. A short scene in the Tower Building is followed by a drive down to The Pleasure Beach. Despite the weather, and the fact that supposedly very few families owned a car, the Pleasure Beach car park is absolutely chocker! The intrepid trio take a trip on the new Grand National and on the Big Dipper. Interesting to note that the new Funhouse has been built, but the Casino building is the original one, probably in its final season. The Helter Skelter is seen doing brisk trade, and our film ends with a brief look at the big wooden slide inside the Fun House. I have uploaded this film as a tribute to my late father, who can be seen on the thumbnail in the foreground of the picture showing The Winter Gardens....Enjoy! Enjoy Nostalgia?
