On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, over 200 students, staff, and families chose service over a day off. Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School's GIVE Day Ambassadors spent 12 weeks preparing for this moment — learning about food insecurity, studying UN Sustainable Development Goal #2 (Zero Hunger), and raising funds through bake sales, spaghetti dinners, and even a pie-in-the-face fundraiser. On January 19, 2026, they put it all into action. Working alongside teachers, administrators, parents, and friends, Henderson students packed 20,000 meals of cinnamon apple oatmeal destined for Hurricane Melissa recovery efforts in Jamaica. Eight packing stations filled the cafeteria with energy, teamwork, and purpose. What made this special? – 12 weeks of preparation and learning – Guest speakers including FCCPS Food Services Director Richard Kane and Meridian HS Sustainability Coordinator Tosin Adetoro – Deep dives into IB learner profile traits like being Caring and Principled – Partnership with Outreach program – Hands-on service learning connecting classroom concepts to real-world impact As one student put it: "Even if you can't donate any money, you'll always be able to donate time or energy. You should always find a way to help out people in any way you can." From sixth graders experiencing their first GIVE Day to eighth-grade ambassadors leading their fourth year, this event embodies what it means to honor Dr. King's legacy through action. #GiveDay #ServiceLearning #MLKDay #IBLearners #CommunityService #FCCPS #ZeroHunger #MakingAnImpact
