She tried to impose her religion back onto the people of her country, and by ordering high profile executions she tried to strike fear into the hearts of her population. One such burning at the stake that occurred was that of Thomas Cranmer's. Thomas Cranmer was the Archbishop of Canterbury during the reign of Tudor monarchs, Henry VIII, Edward VI and Mary I. He was in charge of changing religion across the nation, and Cranmer was involved in bringing in a huge number of reforms such as bringing in new prayer books. He was close with Henry VIII and suggested that Henry VIII should not have to ask the Pope and Rome for permission to divorce his wife, as he was King. Henry VIII divorced Catherine of Aragon, Mary I's mother and then married Anne Boleyn. Cranmer proclaimed Anne Boleyn, Henry's second wife as the rightful Queen and recognised the marriage as valid. Cranmer was so close to the King that when Henry VIII was on his deathbed, Cranmer was the one who gave Henry his last rites. But after Henry's death, Cranmer also served Edward VI. However after Edward's death, times were very dangerous for leading Protestant figures in the Church as Mary I came onto the throne and restored Catholicism across the country. Thomas Cranmer was imprisoned and was then sentenced to death for heresy, and in Oxford he was executed in bloody scenes.
