Jessie Elliott, FRCS, PhD, Trinity St. James's Cancer Institute, Dublin, Ireland, discusses highlights from ESMO 2024, including the TOPGEAR trial which investigated the impact of adding radiotherapy to standard chemotherapy for patients undergoing surgery for gastric and gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma. The trial, which was conducted across multiple sites showed that while the addition of radiotherapy improved pathologic outcomes, it did not translate to improved long-term survival. Dr Elliott also emphasizes the importance of the patient advocacy track at ESMO 2024, highlighting the value of involving patients, carers and advocates in research.
