When he ditched high school, you would find him spending all day in Uptown Whittier at the bookstore and record store. Music is one of his passions as is evident by his extensive vinyl collection 🎶 Barbering always stood out to Del Mar because you could make an honest living and be yourself. So when he was 19, he went to barber school and he became licensed as a barber 8 years ago. Del Mar describes Tip Top as a neighborhood barbershop. He has been working at Tip Top since 2017 and is the Shop Manager. His hope is that everyone who comes to the barbershop can relax and forget their worries for 30 minutes to an hour. There's no TV in the shop, just music and conversations. The friendships built over the years with patrons is what Del Mar loves most about barbering. He's met many good friends at the barbershop who he considers his brothers. Del Mar says, "It's really great because it's more than just at a professional sort of level, it comes out of love.” 💈❤️ One memorable moment at the shop was when a gentleman brought in his father for a haircut and shave for his 100th birthday❣️🎉🎂🎊 ✨ His life advice? "Try to find what makes you happy." He adds, "We live a short life, and we got to enjoy it while we're here.” ✨ Del Mar feels very fortunate to have found what makes him happy at a young age, knowing early on that barbering was the path he wanted to pursue. In 2012, Dré Perales founded Tip Top Barber Shop in his hometown of Whittier, California. After nearly a decade working as a tattoo artist, Dré wanted a change. A conversation with his longtime barber friend led to an invitation to work at his friend's barbershop... and the rest is history! Dré opened his first shop on Whittier Boulevard in 2012 and followed it up with a second location in Uptown in 2013. By 2015, Dré had started his own pomade company, beginning small and designing products for his shops. His approach was grounded in his passion rather than chasing the market. As Dré puts it, "When you're passionate about something, people will align with you. If you're chasing the money, you're not aligned with the people; you're aligned with your pockets.” The style of Tip Top Barber Shop is very influenced by American tattoo art which is what you'll see on the walls. "A lot of this is hand-painted, either by myself or other artists I collect from so 90% of everything in the shop is original," Dré explains. When it comes to music in the shop, they have everything from The Clash to Willie Nelson. They love it all 🎶 What truly makes Tip Top special is the people who work here. Dré feels "Everybody here brings something to the table." ✨ Life Advice: "In order to really be successful, whatever you do, you got to be part of the community that you want to grow in."
