Chapter 89: The Trap The mercenary named Wang Gui let out a blood-curdling scream, his body bound to a tree. His bloodied thigh attracted a swarm of army ants, each no larger than a pinky finger, which gnawed hungrily at the flesh. The surrounding tissue was devoured, revealing the ghastly sight of exposed white bone. Wang Gui, how did you end up tied here? a fellow mercenary inquired, aghast. It was Xiang Chen! He killed our captain and the others! Hurry, come and save me! Wang Gui shrieked, his torment unbearable. Quick, rescue him! The squad leader and his companions rushed forward to assist. Suddenly, the ground beneath them gave way with a resounding crash. As three of them converged, a massive pit opened up, over four meters deep, lined with sharpened bamboo stakes. Ahhh! they cried out in horror as they plummeted into the trap, impaled by the vicious spikes below, meeting a gruesome fate. The physical forms of the True Martial cultivators at the Divine Concealment level were still quite fragile, lacking the innate protective aura, rendering them susceptible to such lethal assaults. This is bad! There’s a trap! the squad leader exclaimed, his face paling as he quickly ordered a retreat, unwilling to approach any further. Gazing into the pit, he saw the unfortunate trio brutally skewered, their plight heartbreaking. Damn it, Wang Gui! Why didn’t you warn us about the trap? the squad leader yelled in fury. I—I was blinded! I couldn’t see anything! Help me! Wang Gui wailed in despair. With a darkened expression, the squad leader swung his blade, unleashing a wave of energy that sliced at the ground ahead. To his dismay, two more areas collapsed, revealing additional traps. After a cautious assessment, he led his remaining men closer to rescue Wang Gui. Yet, as they approached, a rustling sound erupted from the foliage. Suddenly, snares sprang to life, ensnaring their feet with a violent snap. These ropes were connected to bent tree trunks, which, upon release, launched the traps with formidable force, hoisting the unfortunate victims into the air. Ahhh! The cries of the captured echoed as six men found themselves ensnared, lifted aloft by the ropes. In that moment, a figure surged down from a tree, wielding a massive blade with stunning ferocity, unleashing a torrent of lethal energy upon those suspended. No! they gasped in terror, eyes wide as they beheld the youth, his body coated in dark mud to mask his presence from the hunting dogs. With a swift motion, he cleaved through the six men, blood spraying forth as they were gruesomely bisected. Xiang Chen! the squad leader, who had managed to evade the trap, unleashed his true energy and retreated, his gaze seething with rage toward the mud-streaked figure. Correct! Now, behold the crossbow! the youth replied coldly, drawing a treasure crossbow from behind his waist, aiming it at the squad leader. Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh! In an instant, three bolts were released in rapid succession, hurtling toward the squad leader with deadly intent. He hastily swung his blade to deflect the projectiles, the force of the strikes pushing him back with each resounding clash.
